How can research institutions contribute more proactively to shaping future-of-work policies, and how should be be rethinking economic research in the age of AI?

On Thursday June 5, a professional conference “The Future of Jobs”, marking the 60th anniversary of the Institute for Economic Research (IER), took place in Ljubljana.
Together with representatives from the World Economic Forum (WEF), business leaders, HR experts and researchers, they explored key labour market trends, the development of future competences, and the challenges and opportunities economy faces in a time of rapid change.
CELSI was represented by it’s Scientific Director Martin Kahanec, who also participated on panel discussion n. 2, which brought together Directors of Research Institutes from the CESEE Region to discuss research talent in a changing landscape.
They talked about the current trends and challenges in the labour market - such as labour shortages, brain drain, skills mismatches, or demographic pressures, as well as about the measures related to attracting and retaining research talent.
These directors also discussed how can research institutions contribute more proactively to shaping future-of-work policies in the region and what are opportunities to strengthen collaboration between research institutes and businesses in developing the workforce of the future.
On the next day, another working meeting on rethinking economic research in the age of AI. At the interactive working session, directors discussed on how research institutes across the CESEE region are responding to digitalization, with special attention to the use of artificial intelligence and institutional strategies for the future.
It were very engaging and fruitful discussions on the future of research in our region.
