Over the past week, CELSI was pleased to welcome Sarah Tornberg, a PhD candidate at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, for a one-week research visit as part of her collaboration with the CELSI team on the Egruien Horizon project.

During her stay, Sarah engaged in discussions with CELSI colleagues on the Egruien project, sharing experiences and perspectives from the Finnish and Slovak research cases being examined within the project.

Her visit also provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on related topics addressed in recent CELSI research and to discuss broader questions concerning labour, digitalisation, and changing working conditions.

Sarah’s stay at CELSI was concluded by a CELSI Frontiers Seminar on Monday, 14 September, where she presented insights from her article draft titled “Digitalizing elderly care – workers’ perceptions and expectations regarding new digital technologies.”

The paper examines how digital and AI-based technologies are transforming labour processes and labour relations in long-term elderly care in Finland.

The research explores how new digital technologies are perceived and experienced in relation to management control, workload, work performance, quality of care, and professional autonomy.

The discussion highlighted the complex relationship between technological change and professional identities in care work, as well as questions about whether digitalisation may support care workers or instead contribute to work intensification and tighter managerial control.

As the data collection is still ongoing, the article remains at an early stage of development. The seminar therefore provided a valuable opportunity to discuss preliminary insights and possible directions for strengthening the analysis.
