CELSI researcher and Deputy Director Monika Martišková and CELSI researcher Patrik Gažo presented their research on 23 October at the 8th International Conference “Social Boundaries of Work: The Meanings of Work in Organizational Contexts” in Łódź, Poland.

The three-day conference at the University of Lodz brought together researchers, trade unionists and practitioners to discuss how crises, digitalisation, AI and climate change are shifting the boundaries of work.

It was organised by the university’s Department of Sociology of Organization and Management, the Polish Sociological Association, ISA Research Committee 44 on Labour Movements and the Critical Labor Studies Network.

Monika and Patrik spoke in back-to-back panels on the digital and green transition, social dialogue and the labour market.

Monika presented “Eroding Cost Advantage and the EV Transition”, a case study of the Stellantis plant in Trnava. The plant has lost new models to plants in Spain and Morocco while adapting to mixed combustion, hybrid and electric production. Monika examined how workers are coping with these changes.

Her panel brought together partners from the Horizon Europe project EGRUiEN, which studies how social dialogue can steer a just green and digital transition. Colleagues from the universities of Zaragoza, Wrocław and Cardiff compared union and employer strategies at automotive plants in Spain, Poland and the UK.

Patrik, who is also affiliated with the Institute of Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, presented “Classed Climate Orientations in Slovakia’s Green Transition”. He looked at how employees in the automotive, healthcare and agricultural sectors perceive the green transition, and how their position in the labour market shapes that view.
