DEEPLAB: Implications of deep decarbonization of the high emission industries on labour market and employees

RESEARCH PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION: Industrial Decarbonisation and the Future of Jobs in Slovakia

Feb. 27, 2026

What transformation pathways lie ahead for Slovak industry? How will decarbonisation affect labour demand and the skills structure of the workforce by 2050?

Slovakia’s labour market is strongly dependent on industrial employment.

The sector faces multiple pressures simultaneously: high energy prices, regulatory change, skills shortages, and the need to reduce emissions.

Can electrification as a dominant decarbonisation pathway help preserve industrial jobs? Or will alternative technological solutions lead to different employment outcomes?

The workshop will present research findings from the DEEPLAB project, including model-based estimates of labour demand impacts under four industrial decarbonisation scenarios for Slovakia.

Key findings and research results will be presented by CELSI researchers Monika Martišková and Jakub Barszcz.

The aim of the event is to connect modelling results with policy debate and practical solutions supporting workers through industrial transformation.

The programme will also include a panel discussion with practitioners on policy measures that can help meet future labour demand and support workers throughout the transformation process.

The discussion will focus on:

  • transformation scenarios for Slovak industry
  • projected changes in labour demand
  • the future skills composition of the workforce until 2050
  • policy measures needed to ensure a successful and socially sustainable transition
