CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec spoke to Aktuality.sk about Slovakia’s economic situation, support for science and research, and his new advisory role with the European Commission

Aktuality.sk interviewed Martin Kahanec on the occasion of his appointment as a member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission. He is the first Slovak to hold this position.

In his conversation with Vladimír Amrich, Martin Kahanec reflects on Slovakia’s economic development over the past 20 years, calling it a success, while also pointing out current limitations and challenges such as a shortage of skilled labour and demographic issues.

He stresses the need for a clear vision for the country's future—one that includes investment in science, research, and innovation, as well as safeguarding statehood amid geopolitical turbulence. Kahanec also highlights the importance of cooperation between universities and businesses to help Slovakia transition to a knowledge-based economy.

In the interview, you will also learn:

  • what kind of vision Slovakia needs for the next 20 years;
  • how his research is being used;
  • his take on the quality of public discourse in Slovakia;
  • why he believes international comparisons of Slovak wages are inaccurate;
  • what kind of advice he plans to offer the European Commission.
