New publication: crisis corporatism, social dialogue and protecting vulnerable workers during COVID-19 pandemic

CELSI researchers contibuted to the latest special issue of Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research, devoted to crisis corporatism and institutionalised power relations in Europe.

How did European industrial relations systems respond to the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic? What role did social dialogue play, and to what extent was it able to protect vulnerable workers?

CELSI Managing Director Marta Kahancová is a guest editor, together with Minna van Gerven, Anil Duman, and Rense Nieuwenhuis, of the latest special issue of Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research, devoted to crisis corporatism and institutionalised power relations in Europe.

The special issue includes her article “Can crisis corporatism protect vulnerable workers? Conceptual insights from a European perspective”, co-authored by Chaitawat Boonjubun and Anil Duman.

The article shows that countries with stronger corporatist structures were better able to mobilise social partners and mitigate social risks, while more fragmented systems relied on ad hoc or unilateral measures, often leaving vulnerable workers exposed.

As we have already informed, this special issue also includes a contribution by two other CELSI researchers, Monika Martišková and Simona Brunnerová, who together with Inga Blažienė and Julija Moskvina from the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences (Lietuvos socialinių mokslų centras) co-authored an article on social dialogue and crisis governance in Central and Eastern Europe.

Across a range of comparative country studies, the special issue examines how crisis governance reshaped social dialogue, revealed underlying power imbalances, and tested the capacity of existing institutions to respond to both longstanding and emerging labour market vulnerabilities.

The issue concludes with a jointly authored article by all four guest editors, which synthesises both conceptual and empirical insights from the contributions.
