Martin Kahanec in Denník N’s Expert Panel on the economic risks of conflict in the Middle East

In the latest Expert Panel by Denník E, CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec highlighted that prolonged war could significantly increase inflation and weaken economic growth.

As tensions in the Middle East push up energy prices and raise concerns about global growth, experts warn of renewed inflationary pressures and economic slowdown across Europe.

In the latest Expert Panel by Denník E, CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec highlighted that while a short conflict would likely have only limited effects, a prolonged war could significantly increase inflation and weaken economic growth.

For Slovakia, this could mean a higher risk of recession, driven by rising energy costs, lower purchasing power, and increased pressure on public finances.

He also stressed that the situation once again exposes Slovakia’s structural vulnerabilities, particularly its insufficient energy diversification and strong dependence on external developments.

Strengthening cooperation at the EU level and investing in resilience will be key to reducing these risks.
