The future of work in Slovak industry: Monika Martišková in euBrief interview

In a podcast interview for euBrief, CELSI researcher Monika Martišková challenges common assumptions that decarbonisation will lead to the decline of industry.

As Slovakia moves towards climate neutrality, concerns about the future of industrial jobs are becoming increasingly prominent.

In a podcast interview for euBrief, conducted by senior editor Irena Jenčová and producer Adam Bajla, CELSI researcher Monika Martišková challenges common assumptions that decarbonisation will lead to the decline of industry.

Drawing on research and modelling, she explains that while industrial production is likely to remain, it will undergo a profound technological transformation.

Rather than disappearing, factories are expected to evolve towards more digital, automated, and low-emission production systems.

This shift will significantly reshape labour demand. As low-skilled manual jobs decline, demand for workers with technical and digital skills is expected to grow.

At the same time, these changes may open new opportunities, including greater inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Martišková also highlights that the impact of decarbonisation will depend on how well policies anticipate these changes, particularly in education, re-skilling, and labour market support.

Monika shared research results from various research projects, including the DEEPLAB project.

The DEEPLAB project focuses on the economic consequences of decarbonisation and its labour market impacts, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors and their value chains in Slovakia.

It is supported by the European Union NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.
