A new historical case studies report titled “Critical Education and Trade Unions: Episodes from a Rich History of Political Education of the Labour Movement in Europe” has been published.

The collection explores five historical cases of workers’ education from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Spain - tracing how trade unions used education as a tool for political formation, democratic empowerment and social transformation.

The cases offer more than a historical record: they invite reflection on what workers’ education can and should look like today.

The report was co-edited and co-authored by CELSI researchers Tibor T. Meszmann and Adam Šumichrast, together with Karolien Lenaerts (KU Leuven), and also features contributions from Dirk Gillis (KU Leuven), Noah Van Geel (KU Leuven), Ivaylo Dinev (Centre for East European and International Studies - ZOiS), and Luis de la Fuente Sanz (Fundación 1º de Mayo).

The report is part of the EU-funded COMPASS project on new pedagogic methodologies for trade union training.

The project aims at raising the consciousness of trade unions and trade union representatives about the importance of democratic principles, rights and values, in order to foster pro-democratic attitudes and encourage active participation in governance.
