Martin Kahanec in an interview for SME’s ARÉNA on universities, AI and migration

In SME daily’s talk show ARÉNA s Janou Krescanko Dibákovou, he discussed Slovak labour market, universities and migration.

Economist, migration expert, professor and former Dean of the School of Public Policy at Central European University in Vienna, ESET Science Award 2025 laureate.

And one more role that was with some others somehow, inexplicably, forgotten in the introduction: Martin Kahanec is also the founder and Scientific Director of CELSI.

In SME daily’s talk show ARÉNA s Janou Krescanko Dibákovou, he discussed why many students choose universities abroad and how to attract academics back, why AI is replacing the junior positions where young people used to start their careers, and how to bring groups with low employment into work.

On young people entering the labour market, he says: “AI will replace repetitive tasks, but where the human factor and creativity matter, people will find their place. The question is how they will move forward in their careers when the first step is missing.”

On migration, he points to research from around the world showing that “migration rather creates jobs and is complementary to the domestic workforce.”
