Martin Kahanec in the evening news of TV Markíza on why people have more than one job

In TV Markíza’s main news programme, CELSI founder and Scientific Director Martin Kahanec explained the most common reasons why people need another job.

More and more people in Slovakia have more than one job. According to Eurostat data, about 32,000 people had more than one job in 2023, and last year alone their number grew by around 5,600.

The trend is also visible in other EU countries, such as Czechia, Belgium and Denmark. In European comparison, however, Slovakia is still near the bottom. In the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, the share of employed people with more than one job is much higher.

In TV Markíza’s main news programme Televízne noviny, CELSI founder and Scientific Director Martin Kahanec explained that part-time work is much more widespread in those countries, which makes holding several jobs more common.

About a third of people with more than one job say they want extra income, and almost a quarter say they would not make ends meet otherwise. Another quarter do it because they enjoy the work.
