In the category of “Economic Contribution (Written Journalism),” Marianna Onuferová (Denník N) has been nominated for her interview with Martin Kahanec, Co-founder and Research Director of the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI), titled: “The elites have completely resigned from their role of giving the country and people hope, says economist Kahanec.”
In the interview, Martin Kahanec evaluates, among other topics, the government's plans to raise the minimum wage to one thousand euros during this parliamentary term. He also explains which jobs could be threatened by automation, discusses whether he sees artificial intelligence more as a threat or an opportunity, and shares his vision of what a successful economy might look like in 20 to 30 years.
At the same time, he reflects on the general mood in Slovak society. One reason students are reluctant to return to Slovakia, he argues, is the overly negative atmosphere in the country, which often causes people to overlook the positive developments that are also taking place.
He also sees the loss of discernment in society as a failure of the elites: “People who see themselves as the vanguard of society have completely abandoned the role of giving the country and its people hope,” Kahanec says.
The awards ceremony will take place on May 20, 2025, at the Old Market Hall in Bratislava, with the participation of special guests.
