The recent winner of the ESET Science Award in the main category Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia spoke with Marianna Onuferová about the labour market, migration, and the quality of higher education.

He considers the main message of his work to be that returning to Slovakia is worth it.

“The key message is that it makes sense to come back to Slovakia. My wife and I had careers abroad, we worked in several places across Europe and the U.S., but we decided to return. We conduct research here, and part of our work focuses on developing talent in Slovakia. I believe the most important thing is that Slovakia should produce talent — and that these talented people can find meaningful opportunities here,” said Martin Kahanec, co-founder and Scientific Director of the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI).

In the interview, you will also read about:

  • what most often motivates young people to study abroad
  • why he is frustrated by the repeated claim that Slovak universities are of low quality
  • the concept of a Living Wag calculated by the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI) in cooperation with the WageIndicator Foundation
  • and his message to young people encouraging them to consider returning home
