Slovak science funding: going against the global trend

Martin Kahanec shared his perspective on ongoing debate around proposed changes to grant evaluation rules in Hospodárske noviny.

 

Hospodárske noviny has covered ongoing debate around proposed changes to grant evaluation rules at Slovakia's Research and Development Support Agency (APVV), which would make international peer review optional for smaller grants.

CELSI Scientific Director, professor at the Central European University and at the Bratislava University of Economics and Business Martin Kahanec shared his perspective, noting that smaller scientific communities tend to move in the opposite direction - increasing international involvement precisely to ensure impartiality and access to broader expertise.

He pointed to a higher risk of conflicts of interest and limited availability of domestic specialists in some fields as key concerns.
