In a series published regularly by the cultural and social portal Kapitál, Adam focuses on the history of Slovak trade unions.
Adam Šumichrast is a CELSI researcher and historian, leading CELSI's new Labour History research area. He specialises in the historical development of work, labour institutions, trade unions, employer strategies and state labour policies, with a particular focus on Central and Eastern Europe and other transforming societies.
In a series published regularly by the cultural and social portal Kapitál, Adam focuses on the history of Slovak trade unions. The series follows how the trade union movement emerged, took shape and developed on Slovak territory, also in a wider European context.
The first part set out the historical conditions that made the labour movement and trade unions possible. Since then, the series has moved step by step through the key stages and milestones of Slovak trade unions, from their beginnings in the 19th century to their transformation after 1989.
The latest, 12th part turns to interwar Czechoslovakia and in particular to Christian trade unions, which formed a distinct strand in the development of Slovak trade unionism.
