Martin Kahanec in Aktuality.sk on wealth inequality in Slovakia

CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec was asked by Aktuality.sk on distribution of wealth in Slovakia and whether Slovak millionaires have become poorer.

According to the Allianz Global Wealth Report 2026, Slovakia is one of only nine countries in the world where the richest tenth's share of net financial wealth has fallen over the past 20 years. Aktuality.sk asked economists and analysts whether this means Slovak millionaires have become poorer.

CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec points out that Allianz counts only net financial assets and leaves out real estate, which makes up a large part of Slovak households' wealth.

Even under a broader definition of wealth, Slovakia has one of the lowest levels of wealth inequality in the EU. "So it is rather good news about a more even distribution of wealth than proof that 'millionaires are getting poorer'," he says.

The other experts in the article are Pavel Škriniar (Faculty of National Economy, University of Economics in Bratislava), Marián Kočiš (Slovenská sporiteľňa), Ján Košč (Confederation of Slovak Trade Unions), Marián Búlik (OVB Allfinanz Slovensko), Dominik Hapl (Across Private Investments) and Ondrej Greguš (XTB).
