Bratislava companies are competing for employees with Austrian firms too. A new article in Trend looks at how the wage gap between the two countries varies by profession and what it means for Slovak employers trying to keep their people.

Data from our long-standing partner, the WageIndicator Foundation, show that a bricklayer in Slovakia starts at EUR 1,100 to 2,104 gross a month. According to the Austrian labour office AMS, a bricklayer in Austria starts at a minimum of EUR 3,170.

CELSI researcher and Deputy Director Monika Martišková also commented on the topic.

She sees proximity as one of the main advantages of local firms: "If they complement it with a motivating and friendly working environment, they can be competitive even with lower wages compared to Vienna, at least for a certain share of commuters."
